Find out about Ohio's initiative at Town Hall

by John Nolan

This is my first article since becoming president of Stonewall Cleveland. I don't know what the format will be in the future, but I hope that those of you who read this will find it informative, if not entertaining.

Stonewall Cleveland meetings are still being held on the first and third Monday of each month, from

6:30 to 8:00 pm at the Center. We're in the

will likely be done during this year and, perhaps most important, what we must do to fight this effort.

STONEWALL

I recognize that there is some hope that the courts will pull us out of this one by ruling that these initiatives are unconstitutional. I hope that they do, but there's never a guarantee with the courts, and there's always the option of appealing to a higher court. Frankly, no one is quite sure what the U.S. Supreme Court Iwould do with this issue, but I think that we're better off defeating these initiatives at the ballot box, rather than ignoring them and hoping for the protection of the judiciary.

process of setting priorities for our efforts this year, and always welcome constructive input.

While we struggle with internal issues, one of the priorities may have been established for us. As you are probably already aware, we expect a ballot initiative, similar to those in Colorado and Oregon, to be imposed on the state of Ohio this year. What does that mean? Basically, the law would prohibit any city from passing legislation that protects lesbians and gay men from discrimination. Yeah, I know, it hardly seems possible that you can do that sort of thing in the United States in 1994, but, for now, you can. And they have (elsewhere). And they intend to (here). So what do we do?

First of all, inform ourselves. And to that end, Stonewall Cleveland is sponsoring another Lesbian-Gay Town Hall Meeting, on Monday, March 7, at 7 pm at Cleveland State University's University Center, Room 1 (UCI). The guest speaker will be Jerry Bunge, the executive director of Citizens for Justice, a state-wide organization dedicated to defeating the kind of ballot initiative described above. Jerry will be coming up from Columbus to share with us his information on what has been done, what

So, what can you all do? Show up. Please, show up. The issues that Jerry will be discussing strike at our very right to exist in this state. Regardless of the differences between us, this initiative does not discriminate: we all lose if it passes.

Jerry will be asking us for help when he comes to Cleveland, and I don't want that to be a surprise. He'll ask for our financial support, as well as our commitment to battle this effort. That means informing our families and friends about how important this issue is to us, giving of our time and energy to work on the campaign, and exercising our right to vote when this issue is on the ballot. (For those of you who aren't registered voters, you'll have a chance to register at the Town Hall Meeting on March 7.)

Well, this is the first of these articles. I hope to be able to provide useful information in this space in each issue of the Chronicle. For now, our task is fairly simple-be there on March 7 and join us in this effort to protect all of our rights. Thanks for reading!
